Enabling Integrated Lightweight Structures in High Volumes

ENLIGHTEN

Are thermoplastic composites the solution for sustainable transport?

Thermoplastic composites are lightweight materials that can be processed and recycled using energy-efficient processes. As such, these materials are attractive for future sustainable transport vehicles.

However, scaling up both the series size and the physical dimensions of the manufactured structures in a viable and sustainable way poses a major challenge.

The ENLIGHTEN consortium, with six Universities from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and 17 industrial partners, aims to establish physics-based design and manufacturing systems for integrated thermoplastic composite structures.

ABOUT

Climate change is one of the major challenges of our time. To mitigate its irreversible effects, the European Commission has announced their Green Deal, striving for a climate neutral economy by 2050. This calls for sustainable transport solutions, which are lightweight, energy-efficient to manufacture, and recyclable.

OBJECTIVES

The knowledge and tools to be created by the Enlighten consortium are essential to create a breakthrough of large scale and large size applications of TPC materials in multiple value chains, in particular in the aerospace and automotive sector.

CONSORTIUM

The consortium consists of six universities and 17 industrial partners.
