PROJECT
Climate change is one of the major challenges of our time. To mitigate its irreversible effects, the European Commission has announced their Green Deal, striving for a climate neutral economy by 2050. This calls for sustainable transport solutions, which are lightweight, energy-efficient to manufacture, and recyclable.
Thermoplastic composites tick all three boxes and provide a sustainable alternative to conventional materials. Application of thermoplastic composites in larger structures, such as aircraft, or in larger series, as seen in automotive, requires robust manufacturing systems that lead to assembled structures with predictable performance. Enlighten was designed to establish the scientific principles required for a physics-based design and production system of advanced assembly and integration manufacturing methods of TPCs at an industrial scale.

Main project activities

-
Structure-property-performance mapping for advanced thermoplastic composites;
-
Predictive modelling of structure development during welding and overmolding;
-
Lifetime prediction of thermoplastic composite assemblies, considering the processing history;
-
Technology development for inline monitoring during welding and overmolding processes;
-
Physics-supported machine learning for process control;
-
Technology demonstration with industrial partners.
