OBJECTIVES
The knowledge and tools to be created by the Enlighten consortium are essential to create a breakthrough of large scale and large size applications of TPC materials in multiple value chains, in particular in the aerospace and automotive sector. This generates a positive impulse to lightweighting, consequently to electrification (increasing the range with the current batteries) and the related reduction of emissions.
Moreover, composites, alone or in combination with steel, are essential in the redesign of the Body in White structure of electrical vehicles both from a driveability (higher torsional stiffness needed) as well as crashworthiness point of view. On the longer term, this development also facilitates easier recycling of composite materials, by exploiting the inherent advantage of TPCs by direct re-moulding at end-of-life. Considering these aspects, the Enlighten program overall contributes to sustainable solutions for future transport.
Expected results:
-
Scientific understanding of the processing-structure-performance relation of fusion bonding thermoplastic composites;
-
A holistic simulation framework to optimize the long-term performance of integrated thermoplastic composite parts, considering the process-induced structure at all relevant scales;
-
Novel inline monitoring technologies and strategies for thermoplastic composites to allow first-time-right manufacturing without the need for extensive post-process inspection;
-
Pre-production facilities at the involved Universities of Applied Sciences and Research Centers for welding and overmolding to facilitate adoption of the developed technologies by industry.
